Landis Carey’s ceramic practice is rooted in functional pottery. With over 20 years of wheel-throwing experience, she pairs balanced, functional vessels with intricate glazes, each selected to support the beauty of the form.

Following a rare pancreatic cancer diagnosis and strenuous recovery, the artist’s ceramic practice shifted from production into an experimental realm. She expanded her color palette to include the hues she experiences during meditation visions. Sourcing inspiration from these meditative visions, Landis is influenced by the giant swaths of brilliant, undulating, rich color and piercing light she experiences when tuning into the healing frequency of meditation.

Landis sources color inspiration from her meditative visions, using the surfaces of her functional forms to experiment with glaze viscosity, sheen, and texture. The artist recreates portions of her visions on her hand-built wall plates by exploring how lighter glazes pierce darker ones. To achieve the color variations Landis seeks, she often layers four or five glazes in methodical ways so lighter glazes find their way to the surface of the vessel, where ambient light further showcases their presence.

The artist intends for viewers to experience her work on a visceral level at every vantage point.
