Meditations is a project Landis began in the fall of 2024 to handle larger quantities of clay on the potter’s wheel for Advanced Ceramics at Florida Atlantic University. When seeking inspiration, she looked to Medieval British peasant pottery for its tactility and functionality.

Landis began the project by sketching the Medieval pots on small and large scales, a practice that abstracted yet solidified the forms in the artist’s mind, and then she got to work in clay. Upon the project’s completion, Landis realized the circular process she had undertaken by studying the Medieval forms through sketching and throwing.

The artist began the project by sketching the pots’ volumes as circles and ellipses in groupings, then extending them into their complete forms. Once on the wheel, Landis worked in reverse. She first threw the complete forms and then, over time, unknowingly began throwing only the spheres and ellipsoids at the core of the forms, ending in the same place she had begun, focused on orbic volumes.

Throwing has always been a meditative practice for the artist, but this project connected throwing and meditation in heightened ways.

When the artist draws herself into meditation, she imagines herself as a weighted orb sinking as she falls away from the clutter of thoughts and external life towards universality. Once she reaches the experience of purity, she’s often pulled back up and out, where she notices her recent departure and can sink once again. It’s this practice of in and out of universality where the artist must fully shed pretensions and focus on her orb’s weight.
